Aspects of Gilford’s military history are highlighted in the Meetinghouse’s “Military Area” theme center.
From the Revolutionary War to the Civil War to World War II, the impact of the military on local inhabitants is reflected in the items that they saved. These reflections extend from commoners to military officers and even to Franklin Pierce (in respect to his inauguration as the 14th President of the United States).
Display cases house exhibits of bibles, journals, military roll books, a list of Gilford’s Civil War enlistments, historic flags and banners, and even emergency supplies of the mid twentieth century’s “Cold-War era. Even a “prosthetic leg” is part of the display.
Overlooking the “Military Area”, is the massive portrait of Charles William Hunt, MD, who served as an assistant surgeon of the 12th Regiment of NH Volunteers during the Civil War.
This theme area has proved to be of special interest to youngsters visiting the Union Meetinghouse.
